White car parked on westbound college bike lane

Observed by vegantoine on Mon, Jun 23 2008

With the blinkers on. This is the calling card of all Toronto drivers when they want to park illegally. I don't understand why parking enforcement and the police tolerate it.

The blinkers mean "Stop! there is an emergency! I need help!" Imagine if whenever someone did this everyone stopped to "help them"? ;-)

Which also means that if someone really IS in need of assistance, the blinkers will not work to alert anyone, since most drivers put their blinkers only so that they can "get away" with parking illegally.

I often bike by people with their blinkers on (if they are still in the car) and ask them what's wrong with their car. :-)

I don't think so. In general they mean "pay attention - this car is not moving, or is moving at a greatly reduced speed". For example, if this car had run out of gas and was stranded in the bike lane, I'd expect them to turn on the blinkers (and then go get gas ASAP).

I do agree that people use their blinkers as a "get out of jail free" card.

the MTO refers to them as "Hazard Lights" as seen here http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/handbook/section2.12.3.shtml

It seems that they are to be used when your vehicle poses a hazard to others on the road.

Hmmm - in that case, I'd expect to see a good number of cars driving with them on all the time! ;-)
